The Labour party recently seems to have been going through a plethora of change in terms of its key leadership and strategy. It’s only a few weeks since Kezia Dugdale was announced leader of the Scottish Labour party, this week Sadiq Khan was selected as the Labour candidate for London Mayor and of course Jeremy Corbyn has been announced as the new leader of the Labour Party nationally.
Local Conservative Candidate in the forthcoming Scottish Parliament elections, Jamie Green, had this to say: “After a resounding defeat in the General Election across the UK and complete annihilation in Scotland, it is clear to me that Labour has opted to lurch as far to the left as it can with a vote chasing strategy.”
He continued “the selection of Khan in London and Corbyn nationally is a slap in the face to the hard working grass roots Labour campaigners who wanted Labour to maintain is fairly centre ground and moderate direction of late. The Blairites are gone and the party will split in my view. Jeremy has dangerous views on national defence and Britain’s place in the world. I know much less about his views on Scotland and the potential for indyref 2. In Scotland, rather than try and defeat the SNP with clear and positive policy it has decided to try and out-left the Nationalists to chase the votes it lost in May this year, blaming “the Tories” for the ills of the world rather than point out the blatant failings of the SNP in government over 8 years. Labour seems to be apologetic of its pro-Union role in the independence debate to try and appease Yes voters. Let me say this, I am proud of the role the Scottish Conservatives played in that debate and I am proud of the continued loud pro-Union voice we still have, one year on from the referendum.”
Referring to the forthcoming Holyrood elections Jamie said “It is now perfectly clear that a tactical vote for Labour is a wasted one. Those who tried it had their fingers burnt at the ballot. It is even clearer that the only alternative to Socialism or Independence in Scotland lies with the Scottish Conservatives, the true opposition to the SNP and the only true pro-UK party on the ballot it seems.”
Labour is yet to announce its candidate for Cunninghame North.
