In the March 29 meeting of the Rural Economy and Connectivity Committee, Jamie Greene MSP came out in support of pragmatic action on improving the fishing sector in Scotland. Debate in committee focused on new legislation which would greater tackle black-market fishing while trying to not hinder fishing by non-commercial hobbyists.
Mr Greene commented:
“Tackling this issue is important to preserving a key aspect of our community, as well as protecting people from unregulated seafood that can pose health risks. I want to make sure that I am doing everything possible to promote the interests of both the people of West Scotland and the local fisheries of the area.”
“The black market is extremely damaging to law-abiding fishermen who are just out to make an honest living. The key is well defined legislation that looks at both the needs of hobbyists and the general fishing industry. Too often legislation in Scotland is forced through without the detail being looked at, any fishing laws must be properly scrutinised.”
