Local MSP Jamie Greene has criticised the Scottish Government’s plan to for Police Scotland to take control of Scotland’s Railways policing duties, usurping the British Transport Police.
Rail unions have spoken out against the move, while police chiefs have warned that a merger could be "massively complicated".
Mr Greene commented: “There is no appetite for this kind of reform of our railway security. This reform seems poorly thought-through and only done for national identity reasons. The British Transport Police have done a great job in keeping us safe on our railways, there is no need for the change.”
“All the Scottish Government are doing is merging one of the best-performing arms of the police with one of the worst.”
“I will always welcome good reforms when they are needed, but given that we have so many other pressing issues in Scotland I wonder if this is the best use of government resources.”
