Last week, Jamie Greene MSP joined fellow politicians, Paisley creatives and representatives of the public, private and third sectors at a hugely successful reception at the Scottish Parliament last week for Paisley’s bid for UK City of Culture 2021.
Prior to the event Mr Greene spoke in the Scottish Parliament’s debate on Paisley’s bid where he put forward his reasons why he believed Paisley was the right town to win the prize this time. The “Members Debate” was an opportunity for Members from across the political divide to rally round Paisley’s bid for the accolade.
Jamie Greene commented: “What I admire most about Paisley is its sheer resilience. As is the case with many post-industrial towns it has suffered some setbacks but it remains one of the most culturally and historically significant towns in the UK. That’s why I am supporting Paisley for 2021.”
“It’s time that Scotland held the city of culture. Dundee just fell short of the prize last time round, so it’s time to correct that!”
“What’s great about Paisley is it is home to some many of our creative giants. From Paolo Nutini to Gerry Rafferty.”
The UK City of Culture competition is run by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. The rules state that the competition is open to large towns and urban areas, as well as cities. Bids are expected to be lodged in the spring with the short-list announced thereafter. The winner will be announced at the end of 2017.
