Scottish Labour have once again failed to rule out their support for a second referendum on Scottish independence according to Scottish Conservative MSP for West Scotland, Jamie Greene.
Speaking in the BBC Scotland debate, ‘What Now for Scotland?’, Labour’s economy spokesperson Jackie Baillie repeatedly refused to oppose holding a second vote, saying that “We need to keep all of our options on the table”.
According to the Tory MSP it continues “months of flip flopping on the issue” from Kezia Dugdale and the wider Scottish Labour party, as “they have refused to stand up for the union” says Mr Greene.
Speaking to press the Scottish Conservative MSP for West Scotland, Jamie Greene said:
“By contrast the Scottish Conservatives remain steadfastly committed to opposing a second referendum and the break-up of the United Kingdom. Labour’s position on a second independence referendum is becoming more farcical every day.”
Speaking about the televised debate, he added:
“I watched it with my jaw dropped firmly on the floor. Jackie Baillie was given several opportunities to stand up for the union and commit to opposing a referendum, but she failed to do so. Her complete failure to answer the question raises serious questions about her party’s stance on holding another vote.”
Setting a direct challenge to the Scottish Labour party, the pro-union MSP said:
“Kezia Dugdale now needs to make her position clear and commit her party to opposing a second referendum. Are you for Scottish independence or against it? I think the voters deserve to know your unequivocal position. The Scottish Conservatives will always believe that Scotland’s place is within the United Kingdom, and we will fight tirelessly against a second independence referendum.”
