As we mark the New Year, can I start by thanking everyone over this holiday season – from doctors, to nurses, to policewomen, to firemen – who have kept our vital public services going.
Most of us have enjoyed a much-needed break these last few days.
You have been out there making sure the country keeps ticking over.
We’re all incredibly grateful for all you do.
This time of year is always one for looking forward to the New Year. It’s also a time for promises – some of which we may even intend to keep.
Looking forward, I’m hopeful that – after the last few years of uncertainty – the year to come will bring greater security to families across Scotland.
Here in Scotland, we know more jobs are being created and that unemployment is down.
If we get the economy firing on all cylinders, I’m hopeful that in 2016 more people can find the dignity of a job and get on in life.
And as for promises, I have one:
– to speak up for all those people across Scotland who want a country that’s stable….
and who want a decent government that works on their side.
Helping family finances
…creating great local schools
….working for a stronger Scotland in the United Kingdom.
So to Scots at home and abroad
…to those people who have fled hardship and are celebrating their first New Year here in Scotland
…and to everyone across the UK
May I wish you a very Happy New Year and all the best for a great 2016.
