North Ayrshire Conservatives are delighted that Scotland voted NO in thursdays Referendum. With 55% voting to remain within the United Kingdom against 45% who voted to seperate our family of nations, there was a strong and decisive rejection of the YES campaign.
Nearer home, North Ayrshire and Arran residents also rejected the move to break-up the United Kingdom with 51% voting NO and 49% voting YES. To win in North Ayrshire and Arran and in Scotland as a whole was a great achievement by the many volunteers from the local Conservative party and members of Conservative Friends of the Union who worked so hard to achieve this outcome. We were a mainstay of the local Better Together campaign along with colleagues from the Labour and Liberal Democrat parties.
Chairman Richard Wilkinson said "It was a lot of hard work for a sustained period by the volunteers through wind, rain and shine and we are all very happy with the result".
Better Together volunteers celebrated the outcome of the Referendum at a "thank you" party held a few days later.
