Local MSP Jamie Greene today blasted the SNP over its links to donor Tony Banks who allegedly set up a number of tax-avoiding companies.
It was revealed in the Sunday Times that Mr Banks - who is one of the SNP’s single largest donors – has set up a number of companies who were linked with tax avoidance.
Mr Greene commented: “In a week where the SNP will unveil its new budget this comes as an extreme embarrassment when we’re likely to see big tax hikes on ordinary workers.
“The SNP are the first to put out press releases attacking the Tories on a so-called austerity agenda when they are happy to make Scotland the highest taxed part of the UK whilst accepting funds with dubious sources.”
“I welcome the new taxation powers that the Scottish Parliament now has. It is now one of the most powerful devolved administrations in the world. But having that tax power does not mean we should raise them whenever possible, Scotland still needs to be competitive and hanging a sign on the border saying you will be taxed more here will do little to attract wealth and talent to our great country.”
